- Many years ago I wanted to change my career, asked a careers adviser, and was given an answer which was successful
- You don't need to spend any money to find out what you'd like to do as a career. Start by identifying what interests you--think about the things you do when time seems to fly by--you want a career that uses those skills. Next, find out what jobs require those skills. Look through the listings in the Occupational Outlook Handbook from the US Department of Labor http://www.bls.gov/oco/ You'll know what to do from there. Good luck!
- Be careful with Careers Counselling, some people are in it just for the money. A friend of mine was desperate for a job, the company did a nice profile and gave him some interesting web addresses BUT charged £5000 ($8000) for it. He had to borrow the money and he didn't get a new ideas or job leads. If you're going this route try to get recommendations or check any testimonials to see that they are genuine. Or you could be your own careers consultant, these people are probably just releasing the answers that are inside you. What interests you? People often say the happiest workers are those who make their hobby their job. What gets you enthusiastic, can you try something in your spare time before you make the big leap? Play to your own strengths, if your not sure what they are ask your friends/family and don't be offended at their answers! You could also use this book as starting point, Now, Discover Your Strengths. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1416502653/sr=8-2/qid=1156177755/ref=pd_bbs_2/102-7714691-0257768?ie=UTF8 Remember, it's not about the highest salary. Do something that makes you happy and financial success will probably follow, but if it doesn't So What - you're happy. Hope it all goes well, good luck.
